The Association

The Association of South Tyrolean Mountain and Ski Guides

The Association of South Tyrolean Mountain and Ski Guides and its provincial professional chamber are often confused, but they are two different organisations. The South Tyrolean Chamber of Mountain and Ski Guides is an institution under public law, which is based on the mountain and ski guide regulations of the province. The Association of South Tyrolean Mountain and Ski Guides, on the other hand, is a registered association whose primary purpose is to represent the interests of South Tyrolean mountain guides.

The most important tasks of the association are

  • to represent the interests of mountain guides and alpine schools;
  • to ensure the training and further education of members through courses, publications, conferences and exercises;
  • to promote the mountain guide profession and mountain guide training;
  • to disseminate all Alpine disciplines and knowledge of Alpine culture and mountains;
  • to co-operate with the responsible bodies in prevention and rescue measures in the event of alpine accidents;
  • to advise on the safety, feasibility and recoverability of routes and climbs;
  • to foster collegiality among the members;
  • to encourage members to fulfil their professional duties and uphold the reputation of the profession.

The bodies of the association

Unlike the provincial professional chamber, in which hiking guides are also represented, only South Tyrolean mountain guides belong to the association. However, there are extensive parallels between the chamber and the association, also in terms of the bodies and their composition. In order to facilitate the work, the same members form the bodies of the chamber and those of the association - minus the hiking guides.

The general assembly

The General Assembly is the highest body of the Association of South Tyrolean Mountain and Ski Guides. All members belong to it and its decisions determine the direction in which the South Tyrolean mountain guide sector should develop.

The Executive Committee

The Executive Committee consists of eight representatives elected by the General Assembly. It is the executive body of the association and makes all important operational decisions.

The Board of Directors

The Board of Directors consists of the President, Vice President, Management Committee and the section chairmen. It is primarily responsible for electing the President and Vice-President, approving the programme of activities and setting the budget.

The President

The President is elected by the Board of Directors. He represents the association externally.

The auditors

Two auditors monitor the proper administration of the association and control the financial management.

How is the association financed?

The association finances its activities through membership fees, sponsorship and, last but not least, contributions from the public sector, specifically the Provincial Office for Alpine Affairs. The latter supports the work of the association in the interests of public safety and the promotion of mountaineering, which is so fundamental to South Tyrol.
